It was in November of 1977 as Oman was celebrating the Seventh National Day, that I came to Muscat. I had left Beirut, its streets ravaged by war, for a city so little known that most Arabs would have been hard pressed to locate it on a map. From the moment of arrival I was mesmerised by the beauty of the natural environment in which Muscat is set and the magic of its silent mystique. I was given the opportunity to venture deep into Oman’s heartland, the interior region, where I was welcomed with graciousness into the daily lives of the people. I captured some of the unassuming moments encountered using my simple camera. My travels took me from the interior region to the Wilayat of Sur, and finally to Dhofar’s beautiful countryside and the regions principal city, Salalah. Since then, life’s journey has seen me settled in Oman where I have lived through the national development and witnessed its transformation. I have watched its cities and regions prosper and grow, as new generations had the opportunity for a comprehensive education that introduced them to the modern world. Thirty-six years have passed since my first visit to Oman, and I believe that now the time has come for me to publish these photographs. This book is for those new generations who know little of the lives of their forefathers. It is for those who take their modern surroundings and convenient way of life for granted, with little thought to the effort and hardship their predecessors endured to secure it. ___________________________________________________ في نوفمبر من عام 1977 كانت عُمان تحتفل بعيدها الوطني السابع، في هذا الشهر، قادني قدري إلى أن آتي الى مسقط، المدينة التي لا يعرف كثيرين من العرب في ذلك الزمن، أين تقع على الخريطة. أتيت من بيروت، العاصمة التي كنت اقيم فيها، وكانت غارقة في دماءها، ووجعها، وحربها الأهلية الشرسة. منذ اللحظة الأولى، أحاطتني طبيعة مسقط الجغرافية بسحرها وجمالها الصامت، وأُتيحت لي فرصة الدخول إلى وسط البلاد في المنطقة الداخلية، لأُقابَل بترحاب أهلها ودماثة أخلاقهم، وأُعايش طرق حياتهم عن قرب، تَجسَّد كثير منها في العديد من الصور التي التقطتها بكاميرا بسيطة كبساطة حياتهم. ومن محـافـظة الداخلـيـة إلى ولايــة صــور في محافظة جنـوب الشـرقية ومنـها إلى محـافـظة ظـفار وحاضرتها صلاله. وكان لي بعد تلك الرحلة في ذلك الزمن أن أنتقل إلى عُمان لأُقيم فيها إلى الآن، وقد سنحت لي الحياة أن أُواكب وأُعاصر نهضة عُمان ونموّها، وأرى المدن والمناطق تنمو وتزدهر... وأجيالاً جديدة أخذت فرصتها من التعليم ومواكبة العصر بكل الإمكانيات المتاحة التي وُفّرت لها. لذلك بعد ستة وثلاثين عاماً منذ زيارتي الأولى إلى سلطنة عُمان، وأخذي لتلك الصور التي ضمّها هذا الكتاب، رأيت أن الوقت قد حان لنشرها من أجل تلك الأجيال الجديدة التي لم تعد ترى شيئاً من معالم الماضي، وحياة الناس المُعاشة في ذلك الزمن، وترى أن كل ما هو حولها من معالم الحداثة والعصر هو أمر مسلّم به، دون الإلتفات إلى الجهد الذي تكبّدته أجيال سابقة لهم، ليصلوا بهم إلى ما هم عليه الآن
